Adjusting to Life after Spinal Cord Surgery

Francis - Scotchtown

I have been a client of CPA since 2008 after spinal cord surgery left me permanently wheelchair dependent. The transition from hospital rehab to home was difficult. My immediate concern was home accessibility as it was not set up for a wheelchair.

Once I was in I was pretty much stuck. I reached out to CPA not expecting much other than advice and perhaps direction to other services. To my amazement CPA(NS) and their local counsellor were able to help me access funding for a ramp, and then hand controls for my car which not only gave me freedom to travel but also to return to work. They later were able to help me find funding for home accessibly improvements which allow me to get around my home much easier.

Without United Way Cape Breton funding, CPA programs such as this would not be available to help Francis.
